Dry weather, long grass is causing fire concerns By Georgia O’Connor-Harding and Andrew King LONG GRASS in the district is causing concern for firefighters as temperatures start to soar. Considerable rainfall in October was followed by the driest November on record creating excellent growing conditions for grass and other material in the Selwyn and Christchurch districts. Rural principal fire officer for Selwyn and Christchurch Darrin Woods said the anticipated return of nor’west winds during December coupled with the increased amounts of fuel, such as long grass, is concerning. “These conditions, combined with increasingly-cured grasses, are a concern for Fire and Emergency New Zealand in terms of the potential of fires starting and causing damage,” he said. In February, a devastating fire which started in the Selwyn District, combined with one that started in the Port Hills burnt more than 2000ha, destroyed 11 buildings and claimed the life of pilot Steve Askin. Last Wednesday a burning rubbish pile caused an 800 sq m fire on Jarvis Rd, Motukarara.

The Yellow Line Bus was forced to take evasive action when a car failed to stop at the intersection of Dawsons and Jones Rds, Go Bus South Island operations director Nigel Piper said. In 2015, a similar accident happened at the intersection when a concrete truck rolled into a hedge after it was hit by a van load of tourists who failed to stop. “It is not the first and it won’t be the last,” Mr Hope said. He said the intersection may need a solar-powered flashing LED warning sign. But Mr Piper said fortunately these kind of incidents involving buses were uncommon. Police were unable to comment on the incident yesterday.

Wine swigging driver caught four times the legal limit By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A MOTORIST believed to be drinking from a wine cask was stopped by police near Rolleston and was found to be nearly four times the legal driving limit. The 41-year-old woman was

Growth in Selwyn triggers rise

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding RETAIL SPENDING in Selwyn continues to boom. Latest figures show spending for the year ending in September was up 10 per cent on the previous year. Selwyn’s growth far outstrips the average for New Zealand (3.8 per cent) and Canterbury (2.2 per cent). The information was released in Infometrics’ latest quarterly monitor report showing figures in the year to September. Kelvin The latest Davidson report from economic consultancy group Infometrics’’ said a key driver in retail has been rapid growth in Selwyn’s population. The district’s population is projected to grow to 68,937 by 2025. The report said the rise of 3100 in the year to June equated to the growth of 5.5 per cent, the second fastest rate of the country’s 67 authorities only behind Queenstown which grew by 6.9 per cent.

The Vernon Drive retail centre is planned to open in March.

“Selwyn has seen this huge influx of people. It is not just in the last 12 months it is over a very long period of time. As soon as you get more people in all these things will naturally pick up,” said Infometrics senior economist Kelvin Davidson. The growth and spending comes as new commercial developments come online in the district, particularly in Lincoln. The 2400 sq m Vernon Drive

retail centre is planned to open in March. A 1600 sq m retail precinct in Rosemerryn is being build on the corner of Edward St and Eastfield Drive. Construction is due to be completed by February. MB Cook commercial and industrial specialist Mary Cooper said she could not give a timeline for when all tenants for the development would be confirmed for Rosemerryn.

But she said the development has had expressions of interest from several businesses and it was working to get a mixture of tenants including a restaurant, hairdresser and possibly a physio. Rosemerryn will have seven shops, a restaurant, a gym and covers 1ha of land. Gym Flex Fitness has been confirmed for the development so far.

Outlets confirmed for Vernon Drive are Plus Fitness 24/7, physio Motus and Monteith’s Brewery Bar under the name of The Flaming Rabbit. “The demand for people wanting to be in Selwyn is huge and Lincoln is no different,” Vernon Drive leasing agent Jeff Vesey said. The Vernon Drive development has received more than 40 inquiries from businesses about the site. There were only two sites left for leasing, he said. Meanwhile, the latest Infometrics report has outlined commercial accommodation as falling by 12 per cent in the year to September. One reason for this could be the growth of private listings on home-stay network Airbnb which has grown by 129 per cent in Selwyn over the past year. Data from Infometrics showed as of September, Selwyn ranked fourth in the country for the ratio of Airbnb listings to the number of units available in the commercial sector. It sat behind Waikato, Auckland and Porirua City – which ranked at number one.

A NEW bar in Lincoln will be named after one of Selwyn’s largest fires more than 80 years ago. The Monteith’s Bar and Brewery in the Vernon Drive retail centre, will be named The Flaming Rabbit. It will be named after a large 1930s scrub fire in Rolleston, spread by nor’wester winds and running rabbits. Bar owner Paul Goodwin said workers were resealing the Main South Rd when they set fire to the road. “The nor’wester was blowing and it spread across the country all the way through Ellesmere. “As the rabbits were running they were catching fire and spreading the fire,” Mr Goodwin said. Firefighters struggled to contain it. The fire destroyed kilometres of fencing and a large amount of forestry. Mr Goodwin said the full story of the fire will be on display in the bar when it is completed. The bar is planned to be finished in February. Mr Goodwin also owns the Merrin Street Brewery Bar in Christchurch.

Police work through list of attack suspects By Andrew King POLICE ARE working through a list of suspects as they try to solve the brutal assault and attempted drowning of a 15-year-old which happened more than a month ago. The victim was viciously attacked by a group in Rolleston after a fireworks display on November 4. They dragged him to a water race and held his head under water. Some in the group chanted “drown him”. Police are investigating nominations from mem-

bers of the public who have come forward with information about potential offenders, who are a similar age to the victim. “Due to this, police are making extensive inquiries and working through the appropriate channels to investigate this thoroughly,” Detective Constable Mark Burrett said. played a lot of first class cricket and Malcolm Walker used to play for Otago, so there was a good sprinkling of former first class cricketers. How many days is it played over? It’s a five day tournament with a rest day in the middle. I guess you guys would need that at your age. I was fine. I’d actually trained six days a week for six months before it. I know it sounds a bit ridiculous but we all put in a lot of training. When we went to the provincial tournament in Wellington we discovered that by the end of the competition we were down to about six or seven fit players and we had a reasonable sized squad. We realised to do this we needed to get fit. That many guys in that age bracket together would create a bit of a party atmosphere wouldn’t it? Oh yes it was, but interestingly most of our guys were very focused because we had a job to do. On the last night we had a big get-together with everyone. They

How did you make the New Zealand team to play in Australia? In January, Canterbury put in a team for the national tournament. We went to Wellington to play the other provinces and we won. From that tournament they selected players to make up the two New Zealand team to go over and play in the Australian tournament. How did your team get on? We won three of our four games. There was over 500 players at the tournament and this year they also ran a separate over-70s tournament. They pick an Australian national over-60 and 70 team that play against England. Where there any blast from the past cricketers there? The captain of the top New Zealand team was Ewen Chatfield. We had John Cushen, who played domestically for Otago and Auckland. Bevan Guthrie played for Otago. had entertainers and a prize giving but we’re not like Ben Stokes out night clubbing at two in the morning. What do you do in the team? I’m an opening batsman. How did you perform? I can’t say I did as well as I thought I would. I had terrible luck. I got run out. You name it, it happened, but that’s cricket. How far back does your cricket experience stretch? Since a kid. I played for a club that’s now called Southern Districts in town, I then played for Weedons in the country competition and now I play for The Willows Cricket Club. I saw that Richie McCaw was part of a team out there recently. Did you get to play with him? No I missed that one. I’ve played with Ben Blair a couple of times and Kieran Read. We play a lot of secondary school teams which is great. Last year I played against Christchurch Boys’ High School and now the bowler from that team Fraser Sheat is playing for Canterbury, he’s a good lad.

for veteran batsman How long have you been playing at The Willows and how do you get into that team? I actually just filled in for Chris Harris’ brother Ben one day because he had to pull out at the last minute and it’s just carried on from there. The one aspect of cricket there that I think is fantastic is that it’s played in the right spirit. There’s no niggle or nonsense, everyone there is there to enjoy themselves. It’s about the ethos of the game and at The Willows if you carry on like a halfwit you don’t get invited to play again . . . nothing is said, you just find that suddenly you’ve been left off the list. I understand you come from a bit of a sporting family. Yes, I’m one of five boys and four of us have represented New Zealand in different sports. My youngest brother Richard played 50 games for the All Whites. He was in the 1982 team that went to Spain. He was also a New Zealand secondary school cricket rep too. He got a contract to play football overseas so he concentrated on football. That’s one brother, what other brothers have repre-

He was a very good football goalkeeper as well but he never got past Canterbury level.

Did the five of you play in many teams together? At one stage all five of us played for Weedons Cricket Club and our father was the scorer. Who was the star for the team? Well, when Richard was in the New Zealand team he came back once mid-way through a two-day game. In the country competition you could change a couple of players during a game because in the farming community a couple of guys may have had a harvest on or something. Anyway, we were playing Southbridge and in a bit of trouble. He came back and

We had a very good team back then. We had three All Blacks in it, plus Mike Cron who is the All Blacks’ scrum doctor. Any other sports? I play tennis at the Cashmere Tennis Club. I played my first game of interclub last year at 62. I’d played previously before I was 10 but then concentrated on cricket. I got invited to join a group that hit at Cashmere on a Thursday night and I love it. We better talk about something other than sport . . . you work in advertising? Yeah since leaving school. I’ve been marketing manager for companies like Hertz, Fairydown, then I spent several years in marketing at CocaCola and for agencies. We’ve now had our own business for over 20 years. Are your offices in town? No. My wife Julie and I built offices at our property in Ladbrooks and we work from here. It’s good I can gaze out the window and look at my cattle.

LIQUORLAND HEARING A decision over whether a new bottle store can open in Lincoln is expected to be made in a few weeks. A hearing was held last week after an application was made by SJTP Ltd for an off-licence Liquorland bottle store on Vernon Drive, opposite New World. A district council spokesman said the application is expected to take a few weeks. The bottle store has received 161 objections. CORRECTION On November 29, Selwyn Times reported more than 400 cars and trucks were on display at the district’s first Jones Rd Auto Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day and about 800 people attended the event. That was incorrect. There were more than 850 registered cars on display and between 5000 to 6000 people came to view the event. Selwyn Times also reported the funds raised from the day would go to St John Ambulance Rolleston. This was also incorrect. All proceeds will go to St John Selwyn Central which covers a large area including Leeston, Lincoln, Southbridge and Rakaia. The day also featured trade displays, bands and children entertainment. Selwyn Times apologises for the errors.

Team to protect vulnerable children By Andrew King and Georgia O’Connor-Harding A WORKING group has been set up as a programme aimed at supporting vulnerable children plans to move into Selwyn. The Ministry of Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki is planning to bring its children’s team approach into the district as part of an expansion project. But it could be another six months before the programme is launched. The confirmed working party is to be made up of 10 members from the district council, education, health, police, the ministry and non-government organisations. It comes as populations in Selwyn are projected to grow to 68,937 by 2025. Canterbury children’s team director Ross Haggart said the programme’s expansion activity plan was discussed at its meeting last month. The programme aims to support at-risk children who do not need a statutory care and protection response but still need intensive, cross-agency support. “The children’s team is an approach rather than a service. It is about using the existing services and resources that are available

Mr Haggart said it is also about involving families in making those plans. The Canterbury children’s team has been in place since December 2015 as has expanded from Christchurch into places including North Canterbury and Ashburton.

Statistics showed the total number of notifications including police family violence referrals to the Ministry of Vulnerable Children between July 2016 and March this year in the Christchurch west area was 1537. The next meeting with the working party is to be held in February.

Jones Road Auto Selwyn Motorfest resounding success A celebration of all things motoring brought people out in their thousands to Rolleston on November 26. The Jones Road Auto Selwyn Motorfest proved to be a resounding success with more than 850 vehicles on display and about 5000 people through the gates. The event was used to fundraise for St John’s Ambulance for Selwyn Central – which saw about $25,000 raised for the cause. Selwyn District Councillor Craig Watson said the committee was blown away with the response from the community. “We were expecting about 400 cars and about 2000 people, we knew there would probably be more but not to the extent we saw on the day.” What was one of the biggest highlights for the committee was the support of the community and other stakeholders, given the event was in its first year. “People put trust in us that it was going to work, so we are indebted to them for coming and showing their vehicles or taking part in the market or food stalls.” The resounding comments back from people who

attended were how it was a real family day with lots of free activities to enjoy. “People said they were able to keep the kids entertained for a whole day not just a couple of hours.” Many also enjoyed the Emergency Services display of vehicles with historical ambulances sitting aside the latest Generation 2 ambulances as well as fire engines and police vehicles. Children were also thrilled to be “clocked” by police speed guns – to see how fast they could run, said Cr Watson. What was different about the day was there was no focus on one type of vehicle. It was a celebration of each person’s “pride and joy” whether they were vintage, classic, two-wheels, four wheels or more. It is hoped another event will be held but will be dependent on future support. “Whatever the community wants it to be we will be able to do it but we will need their support. We will need volunteers to come on the committee and help us to organise it because as you can imagine there was quite a lot of work involved.”

Books to help kids stay safe

THE DISTRICT council has launched a new resource to help children and families make sure they’re prepared for emergencies. It has developed an emergency preparedness booklet which teaches children about what to do in an emergency and encourages households to make their own emergency preparedness plans. District council community resilience co-ordinator Sue Jenkins said the book has been well received at Lincoln Primary School, where they were recently presented to 160 year 5 and 6 students. “Students enjoyed visiting the emergency command bus and meeting ‘Stan’, the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management mascot. “We hope to visit more Selwyn primary schools in 2018. We are encouraging principals to make time in the busy school day to

Springfield’s donut gets safety upgrade By Georgia O’Connor-Harding SPRINGFIELD’S donut is undergoing a safety upgrade. The six-tonne landmark’s concrete base has been identified as a fall hazard and in need of an upgrade. A district council spokesman said under Standards New Zealand the donut is required to have a safety surface which provides impact absorbency so people could climb on it. The new safety surface has been ordered and is expected to be installed before the end of the month. The district council spokesman said it did not have the total cost of the safety surface as it had not been installed yet. The donut was last replaced in 2012 after an earlier version was damaged by fire in 2009. The original donut was gifted to the town by 20th Century Fox in 2007 as part of The Simpsons movie launch. It also celebrated the cartoon’s main protagonist Homer Simpson’s love of donuts.

Selwyn babies in new book SELWYN DISTRICT Libraries has launched a new book featuring local babies. Babies are Brave is a bi-lingual Māori/English book, featuring Waikirikiri tamariki. The book will be part of the free district libraries baby pack that will be rolled out next year to grow and spread a love of reading throughout the district. The baby pack will be distributed through Plunket to Selwyn newborns.

Babies are Brave is also available now for purchase at the district libraries. Staff held a book launch at the Lincoln Library and invited the children featured in the publication along for a celebration, with cake and a story-time session with the new book. Libraries manager Vicki Carlyon said research shows early exposure to books and stories substantially contributes

to success in early literacy. “There are strong links between literacy, school performance, self-esteem and life chances with poor literacy skills being linked with lower education, earnings, health and social outcomes,” she said. Staff hope this initiative will be as successful as Bookstart, the world’s first book-gifting programme which began in 1992 and today reaches children across the United Kingdom. Art on show at Ellesmere College By Nicole Ashby SHARING student success is the main aim for the inaugural art exhibition at Ellesmere College. Junior and senior students have created a range of artworks from creative junior projects to senior art portfolios. The students have created original pieces of work which they are now able to share with friends, family and the community. Said the school’s art teacher Katrina Lilly: “Exhibiting work can make anyone nervous. Essentially you are putting your work out there for compliments or criticism. “Being able to take both with equal measure is a skill that takes practice and what better place to start than in an environment where the students can feel safe.” A percentage of each of the sales goes to the Ellesmere Art Club for future events and the development of art-centered experiences. A range of artworks will also be for show only. Year 13 student Leecia Johnson has created art based on the theme of wildlife poaching. “I picked this theme because I am passionate about wildlife and wanted to try and raise aware-

ness about the horrible things that happen to these amazing animals.” She wishes to carry on with this work in the future by going into animal conservation where she can experience these problems first hand and try to help eliminate them. The exhibition opened last

night at the Ellesmere College Wilson Room. Entry is by a gold coin donation. The event will run until 3pm on Friday. Pieces purchased will be available for pick-up on Friday. A successful exhibition this year will allow the event to grow and continue in years to come.

Bringing Xmas cheer to less fortunate By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HEARTS WILL be warmed this Christmas with Lincoln High School junior students dropping off hand-crafted cards and shoe boxes to the less fortunate. Year 10 students are gifting cards to people in retirement homes across New Zealand who do not receive Christmas wishes. But the entire community will have the opportunity to spread the Christmas cheer with an official post box set up at the school’s office for anyone who would like to create a card. It comes as part of a nationwide programme Sending Love which was set up by Auckland mother Hannah Rodgers. The initiative encourages communities to make a festive gesture to others experiencing loneliness over Christmas. It is hoping 16,000 cards will be gifted to the elderly nationwide and has post boxes located across the country. “We sort of felt it was more what Christmas should be about,” assistant principal Kylie Wissel said. But it is not the only gesture the school will make with year 9 students currently building shoe boxes to gift to Women’s Refuge New Zealand. The boxes will contain necessities such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors and gifts for children. Mrs Wissel said every year the school does something for the community. The idea for the school to get

About 500 students are taking part in the whole programme. Anyone wishing to drop of a handmade card at the school’s office need to do so before December 15.

Lincoln pupils have fun on the water SPLASH, SCREAM, shrieks and laughter – those were the sounds of about 180 children having fun on Lake Rua, Harewood, last week. As part of an education outside the classroom trip, Lincoln Primary School year 5 and 6 pupils spent a day out on the water. The day was organised by Simon Rutherford, of Kore Education, along with four adult coaches. The pupils had the opportunity to learn how to get in and out of kayaks, paddle, raft and walk along the top of boats tied together. They also learnt to balance on up-turned Optimist dinghies and swam under the dinghies to see if there was an air pocket underneath. Pupils were encouraged to put themselves out of their comfort zones while wearing life jackets and learning other water safety skills. When the pupils arrived at Lake Rua, they were split into three activity groups which rotated over three different activities. Year 6 pupil Shayna said it was a great day and the pupils had an awesome time learning about water safety while paddling kayaks and rafts as well as jumping in and out of the water. Darfield-South Malvern dominate DARFIELD-South Malvern ripped through the Lincoln top order in a dominant seven-wicket victory at Lincoln Domain in the Canterbury Country premier one-day compeititon. Jack Hyde was the pick of the Cheviot bowlers, taking 3-11 off nine overs. In reply, Cheviot were always chasing the game, especially after losing Canterbury Country representative Andy Burnett early. Milligan, Ransley race to podiums in Taupo round By Gordon Findlater PREBBLETON racers Jack Milligan and Jaden Ransley came home with a string of podium finishes from the second round of the Toyota 86 Championship in Taupo at the weekend. Milligan, 21 and Ransley, 15, both finished on the podium twice in three races at Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park. Milligan – who came into the round sitting second in the championship – has kept his title hopes well and truly alive with a consistent weekend to now be third in the championship. But, more importantly, he’s just eight points behind leader Connor Adams. “It’s a good haul of points for us. I wasn’t happy with qualifying but we made some changes and did well to make our way up the field in the opening race,”

said Milligan. In Saturday’s opening race, Ransley secured the best result of his young 86 championship career, finishing second. He crossed the line behind 23-year-old Michael Scott and did well to hold off a charging Milligan who had to battle for third. “It’s getting really tight at the top now. Jaden had his car really dialled in and we had a good wee battle,” said Milligan. In race two, Milligan took a brief championship lead when he finished second behind Adams, who led from start to finish. Ransley also continued his form at Taupo to finish third. The final race of the weekend saw previous championship leader Tom Alexander stake his claim. Ransley and Milligan were unable to complete a weekend of podiums

finishing in fourth and fifth respectively. However, both return home with a valuable collection of championship points. The pair will both go into the next round of the championship with high hopes at their home event in Ruapuna from January 12-14. “It should be a good old battle at Ruapuna. It’s an event I want to go well at and other local guys like Jaden and Tom will be really quick,” said Milligan. Lucia performs beyond her years to take tennis silver By Gordon Findlater PREBBLETON School’s Lucia Gale (left) competed in an older age group to finish second at the South Island primary school tennis finals in Timaru last week. The year 4 pupil competed in the year 6 girls singles and went unbeaten in three pool matches, including a 4-2, 2-4, 4-1 victory over No 1 seed Mya Haigh from Maori Hill School in Dunedin. Lucia lost in the final to No 2 seed Cherry Zhou from St Andrew’s College Preparatory School 1-4, 1-4. The two singles finalists teamed up in the

doubles to win the year 6 title. They defeated Mya and Charlotte Byers 6-3 in the final. A week earlier, Lucia won the year 6 and under Canterbury primary school title. She was dominant, not dropping a single game in her three matches leading to the final, in which she defeated Cherry 4-2, 4-2. Leeston School’s Molly McKenzie and Sophia Amyes also competed in the South Island year 6 and under girls singles after making the semi-final of the Canterbury tournament. Swimming brothers win awards By Andrew King SELWYN SWIMMERS Ieuan and Celyn Edwards have won big at the ParaFed Canterbury sports awards, capping off a great year. Ieuan, 15, won the club swimmer of the year award while Celyn, 16, was awarded the Graham Condon Scholarship. Graham Condon was a disabled athlete who won seven medals for New Zealand, competing in Paralympic swimming and athletic events and a total of 36 medals in international competition overall. Both Ieuan and Celyn attended Hillmorton High School. Ieuan said the award rounded off a great year for him. “I would like to continue improving in the pool and I would love to be a Paralympian one day. It would be amazing to represent New Zealand in that way,” he said. Celyn said it was an honour to receive the scholarship. “Looking at the names of previous recipients on it it has been awarded to some very impressive people who have made a huge impact on the sport. I am ecstatic to be seen

as having the potential to walk in the steps of some of New Zealand’s best Paralympians,” he said. In July, the brothers travelled with the five-strong New Zealand team which broke one Oceania and 10 national records, had a number three in the world-ranked performance, three swimmers achieving Commonwealth Games qualifying times and 20 personal bests. Celyn broke records for the 50 and 100m butterfly, 50 and 100m freestyle, 50 and 100m breaststroke and 50m backstroke in the S8 classification category. Ieuan didn’t manage to break any records but broke six of his own personal bests in the 50, 100 and 200m breaststroke, 50 and 100m backstroke, 50 and 100m freestyle events. In the 200m breaststroke, he beat his previous best by 11sec.

Summer is here – time to use our Water Sense! It’s getting hot in Selwyn and with warmer weather comes higher water usage. So that we can continue to supply households with water over summer, and to help conserve water, we are recommending that residents on Council water supplies try to water lawns between 9pm–6am (most recommended) or, on cooler overcast days, between 9am–4pm. Avoid irrigating between 6–9am or 4–9pm as these are times when households use the most water and pressure can drop with high demand. If demand for water increases over summer, water restrictions may be introduced requiring households to avoid watering lawns at specific times. Summer water restrictions are commonly used in New Zealand as a way to manage demand for water.

@ the Library A post-it street art exhibition created by Rolleston College’s ‘More than just a Tag’ visual art class is taking place this month to bring art into the community in unexpected ways. The Council’s Arts, Culture and Heritage team has collaborated with Rolleston College to bring Post it @ the Library to Rolleston Library and Community Centre. Visual art teacher Rob Ferguson says the class aims to help students create and interact with visual arts in a public, real world context, sharing artistic expression with the wider community. “Learners have been inspired by contemporary street artists such as Banksy and Invader. Street art allows art to exist in places where you wouldn’t expect it, provoking the audience to ponder on concepts outside their everyday life,” Mr Ferguson says. Each work has been carefully planned by the students. Beginning with research into subjectmatter, students created a concept grid to map out their creation pixel by pixel. They then calculated how many post-its were required to bring their vision into the physical world. Some artworks have used well over 700 post-its and are up to 2.5 metres in height. The Post it @ the Library exhibition opening will take place on Thursday 7 December at the Rolleston Library and Community Centre, between 5.30–6.30pm. All are welcome to attend. The exhibition will be on display until Friday 22 December.

Selwyn schools ‘get ready’ Selwyn District Council has launched a new resource to help children and families make sure they’re prepared for emergencies. The Council has developed an emergency preparedness booklet which teaches children about what to do in an emergency and encourages households to make their own emergency preparedness plans. Community Resilience Coordinator Sue Jenkins says the book has been well-received at Lincoln Primary School, where the booklets were recently presented to 160 Year 5 and 6 students. “Students enjoyed visiting the Emergency Command Bus and meeting ‘Stan’, the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) mascot,” she says. The booklet is filled with fun, informative activities for children to complete relating to different scenarios. Council hopes to visit more Selwyn primary schools in 2018 to discuss emergency preparedness and hand out copies of the ‘What’s the Plan Stan’ booklets. Selwyn households can also take the opportunity to sign up to Selwyn Gets Ready, Selwyn’s own emergency alert system. Gets Ready is used to share emergency warnings and alerts via text and email. Over 7,000 Selwyn households are already signed up.

It is likely that Canterbury will have a dry, hot summer. As in previous years, we are encouraging property owners to cut or graze long grass before it starts to dry off to avoid it becoming a fire hazard. It’s important to know that while grass may look green, it can still burn in the right conditions. If you have long grass on your property, now is a good time to either graze it or mow it on a cooler day to reduce the risk of fire affecting your property. Council does not maintain roadsides except at intersections to keep sight distance for drivers and outside Council-owned properties eg reserves, cemeteries, quarries. Mowing of intersections is under way as part of the road maintenance contract. The Council is responsible for complaints relating to vegetation on properties causing a fire risk. People can contact Selwyn District Council to make a complaint on 347 2800. On 1 July 2017 Selwyn District Council Rural Fire Authority merged with the New Zealand Fire Service and other rural fire organisations to form Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). FENZ is now responsible for all aspects of rural fire, including permitting.

Call the Helpline on 347 2800 to place a service request. Property owners are also asked to keep trees and vegetation clear from footpaths. Note that the Council may trim vegetation back from properties if it crosses into a Council reserve in a manner that could impede or injure users of a reserve. With summer’s arrival we’re also encouraging residents to water trees directly outside your house on the roadside berm, especially young trees which are susceptible to dry conditions.

Garden snail a common pest Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us

THE COMMON garden snail (Cornu aspersum) is an exotic pest species native to Europe and now found on all continents apart from Antarctica. The adult snail shell is typically dark brown with yellow stripes or streaks and is 2540mm in diameter. The soft brown-grey body is slimy and soft enabling it to retract itself into its shell for safety. When stressed or injured it produces frothy mucus as defence. In extremes of cold or dryness the snail can seal its opening with a thin membrane of dry mucus which can stick to surfaces like glue.

Event centre recognised for contribution to community EARTHY: The common garden snail’s brown-grey body is slimy and soft enabling it to retract itself into its shell for safety. The shell is typically dark brown with yellow stripes or streaks and is 25-40mm in diameter. During winter it can be dormant and through chemical changes to its haemolymph (blood) it is able to withstand a 5deg C frost. Snails have four tentacles, the larger upper pair have eye-like light sensors, while the lower pair are tactile olfactory sense organs. Beneath the tentacles is the mouth that contains a ‘toothed tongue’ that the snail uses to scrape and manipulate its food particles. Being hermaphrodites snails

contain both male and female organs which means they can mate with any other snail. Mating sessions can take several hours where two snails exchange sperm and use ‘love darts’ which increases the likelihood of donor sperm being successful. Snails lay a batch of about 80 spherical pearly-white 4mm eggs in moist locations. Snails take one to two years from egg to maturity.

THE LINCOLN Event Centre has received two awards recognising its contribution to the community and environment. Earlier this month staff attended the New Zealand Recreation Association Awards in New Plymouth where the centre received a merit award in the outstanding recreation facility category. This award has six different criteria including innovation, community engagement, excellence, achievement, efficiency and effectiveness and sustainability. The judges said they were particularly impressed with the event centre’s responsiveness to a changing and growing market. “It was the centre’s ability to respond quickly to the rapidly changing and expanding community, the diversity of use and great growth figures within a relatively short space of time that was most impressive,” said Robyn

Getting into the spirit of By Andrew King JESEL ROYOKADA embodies everything that is the Star Media City2Surf. Last year he was photographed leaping into the air after crossing the line capturing the spirit of the event. Now, the Christchurch Fijian Seventh-Day Adventist Church pastor has asked his congregation of about 80 to get involved in the event as a way to connect with other cultures. “We come from the islands and sometimes we do things in our own island groups but it is good to get involved with the rest of

the community,” he said. The 31-year-old encouraged about 25 of his parishioners to get involved in the event last year “It was the first time our church has got involved with something like this,” he said. He said they were told about the event by Healthy Families Christchurch, part of a nationwide Government initiative a imed at helping New Zealanders live healthy, active lives. “I would like to see all 80 of them out there, and their friends and families. We can even have kids in prams at the event,” he said.

He said they will start to train soon for the event, which will be held on March 18. The event is split into two sections – 6km and 14km. The Star Media City2Surf with Les Mills 14km event starts in Centennial Park, Spreydon, at 9am. The Sport Canterbury 6km event starts at 10am in Hansen Park, Opawa. Both finish at the Ferrymead playing fields. There will be after-event entertainment with live music, food and free children’s entertainment in the finish area. Earlybird entries open online on December 1 and cost $20. They can be purchased from http://www.city2surf.co.nz/ Standard entry from January 1 will cost $25 online or tickets can be purchased from The Athletes Foot, Pak’n Save and New World supermarkets. Leeston pupils’ big catch LEESTON PRIMARY School pupils have tried out their fishing skills. The students from room eight went fishing at Peacock Springs near Christchurch Airport. The school is one of 30 in the North Canterbury Fish & Game region which take part in the fresh waters programme,

Get ready for Ma Bell’s Xmas show SCOTTISH-BORN folk, blues and jazz singer-songwriter Isabella (Izzy) Miller Bell is coming out of the kitchen on Sunday for a special Christmas celebration concert. Known as Ma Bell, she will bring Christchurch band Molly’s Remedy and slide/finger-style guitarist Susan Leigh Grant with her to the stage to perform their concert Coming Out of the Kitchen. It will be held at the Nut Point Centre, West Melton. As producer of the Christchurch Pop Up Concert Series, Ma Bell is no stranger to performing in the Selwyn community. The pop-up series was a sixyear, artist-led music project launched in 2011 to support performers after the quakes. The 68-year-old vintage folk blues artist said it had been a fantastic project that would not have been possible without the support of a Creative Communities scheme grant, the artists, the small businesses involved and the good people who supported and went along to the shows. As part of the series, Ma Bell has performed several concerts at the Nut Point Centre,

Ensuring a safe work place Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children

are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. Watch out for Chilean needle grass this summer It’s early in the Chilean needle grass season, but plants are already in full flower across Canterbury. Chilean needle grass is an invasive pasture pest that reduces crop yields, causes animal welfare issues and places some restrictions on infested farms, such as not being able to make and distribute hay outside of their own property. “Approximately half of the Canterbury region is susceptible to Chilean needle grass, and around 350 hectares of land is infested across North and Central Canterbury,” Environment Canterbury’s principal resource management advisor biosecurity Laurence Smith says. “Identifying an infestation early will make containing and controlling the pest less expensive and more manageable. We encourage any landowners who suspect they may have signs of the pest to contact Environment Canterbury immediately.” Chilean needle grass is a nationwide problem with approximately 15 million hectares of land across New Zealand are suitable habitat for growth.

National food security strategy needed, Horticulture NZ says According to a recent report from Horticulture New Zealand, a perfect storm is brewing for New Zealand’s supply of healthy fresh fruit and vegetables that could see us unable to feed our growing population with domestically grown produce, In releasing the report, New Zealand domestic vegetable production: the growing story, Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Mike Chapman said it was time to take stock and develop a national food security strategy. “Our research shows that New Zealanders not only want to know where their fruit and vegetables come from, they want to buy New Zealand grown. This report looks at the factors that will impact security of supply. “Our current consumption levels of fresh produce show that net production is already below what is required for domestic consumption, meaning we can expect food shortages if we can’t get that balance of supply from imports,” Mr Chapman said. “Prime fruit and vegetable-growing land is being squeezed by rapid growth in towns and cities and high demand for new housing. Changes in weather patterns and extreme unseasonal weather events are becoming more frequent and damaging, impacting the supply and, consequently, the price of fresh, healthy food.

“Things are changing fast, so we need to look closely at our domestic food supply and be sure that town, city and regional planning decisions are seen in the context of impacting the whole of New Zealand’s food supply.” The report looks at domestic vegetable supply, particularly of what would be considered staple vegetables, to examine all the factors that go into getting these vegetables from the field to the plate. It examines the challenges to supply, through to what is driving demand and price. “Information and evidence are required to enable good decisions about New Zealand’s domestic food supply and we are keen to engage the new Government with our call for a national food security strategy,” Mr Chapman said. “Domestic supply is not being viewed as a national system, with identified strengths and weaknesses, to give New Zealanders continued access to all the fresh fruit and vegetables they need in the future. Local, district and regional decision-making doesn’t look beyond its borders. While this is appropriate in the context of their planning, consideration is not given to national food supply when land is zoned for housing, or when water is allocated. “We need to future-proof the resources required to supply food to our growing population, and this report looks at this

Lincoln University Dairy Farm to hold Fonterra Open Gates Day The Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF) its opening its gates on December 10 to show off its environmental management to the public. The Open Day is part of the nationwide Fonterra Open Gates Day, which is highlighting how farmers, along with the rest of New Zealand, care about what is happening with our waterways and the environment. It will show how dairy farmers are working to protect our waterway with the likes of specialised native planting, fencing to keep animals out of the water, nutrient management and irrigation efficiency. The Lincoln University Dairy Farm is a demonstration farm, and its environmental work is based on the efficient use of nutrients on the farm, to provide examples to farmers and keep it out of rivers and streams. The day also highlights the process of producing dairy products, and the journey from ‘Sunshine into Food’. “We want to expose people to what happens on a regular pasture-based dairy farm and answer some of their questions around the detail in the science and technology of producing milk on farm,” executive director of farm operator SIDDC, Ron Pellow says. “LUDF operates as both a demonstration

farm for other farmers, and a commercial entity. We also have the stated aim to increase productivity on the farm without i n c r e a s i n g the overall environmental footprint. Join the Christmas Lincoln will be a buzz of activity this Saturday when Santa arrives in town. The Lincoln Christmas Parade and Market will be a day of festivities for all the family with stalls, entertainment, competitions and the Santa Parade, along with the popular Farmers’ and Craft Market. Organised by the volunteer Lincoln Christmas Parade committee, considerable work has gone into making this a really great day out and there will be something for everyone. “We’ve had lots of interest from stallholders with close to 60 already booked,” says Martin Bennett who with wife Lisa owns and operates The Laboratory in Lincoln and is one of the organisers of this special day. There will be a diverse range of stalls including those offering snacks and drinks. They will stretch along Lincoln’s main street (which will be closed off to traffic) from The Famous Grouse to The Laboratory.

The wide assortment of goods on sale will help you take care of the Christmas present shopping as well as find some treats to tuck away for Christmas Day or just to enjoy, along with plants for the garden, a bouncy castle to keep the children entertained and more. The Lincoln Rotary Club and Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade will be there raising money with raffles and other activities making this day a great community event. The Lincoln Farmers and Craft Market will be operating in its usual place, next to the Lincoln Library, spilling out onto the green behind. Throughout the morning, the Ellesmere Big Band will be playing outside iSushi and the Woolston Concert Brass Band will perform at 11.30am on the library green. Accompanying the many individuals, local clubs and businesses who will participate in the parade will be the Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band and Woolston Junior Brass Band. Crazy clowns, Adam Allsorts and Silly Milly, will also be in the parade

Strong demand for smaller sections in West Melton Such is the demand for smaller sections in West Melton that both Wilfield and Preston Downs subdivisons have released new sections to accommodate these buyers. Wilfield released 15 sections between 900m2 and 1000m2 in October and only three remain, while neighbouring Preston Downs has just released 12 sections of this size. The Preston Downs sections are bordered by the West Coast Road and Iris Taylor Avenue. Wilfield sections are from $215,000 while Preston Downs sections start at $209,500. Hamish Wheelans, director of Gillman Wheelans, developer of both subdivisons, said that while West Melton has been characterised by bigger sections, there was a population group that were now looking for something a bit smaller. “I think it is a combination of the population base increasing and correspondingly purchasers’ expectations becoming more varied. “Whatever the reason, the demand is very strong,” he said. With the 12 sections at Preston Downs, originally the plan was to develop these for

commercial use, he said. “We applied to the Selwyn District Council for resource consent to zone this area as commercial, but unfortunately that was declined. The land is now being developed into residential sections. “We are really excited about the way West Melton is developing. As well as the popular primary school, there is the new retail area, plus a pre-school at Preston Downs. A second pre-school will open in Wilfield early next year and work has already commenced on the new West Melton Community and Recreation Centre. All these amenities complement the wide range of other recreational areas within the West Melton Community. “As a sponsor of the new centre, we are especially looking forward to this opening next year,” he said. The Wilfield sales office is open every Wednesday and Sunday, 1pm-3pm. No two days the same at West Melton Kindy The West Melton Kindy children had a fun morning of hammering and building on a recent Friday. Amy from Bunnings Riccarton arrived with pre-cut sets of timber to run a ‘Bunnings Preschool workshop’ with the children. Parents and grandparents were invited to come and help and there was a fabulous turnout, the staff said. Children enjoyed sharing their kindy environment with family members and playing together as Amy set up for the morning’s experience. After a quick introduction and a description of the process, the adults were duly warned to be careful not to hold the nails for children to hammer! Then they began. The two and three-year-old children quickly trialled a few different ways of putting the pieces together, but with gentle guidance from the helpers, the squares and rectangles were sorted. Nails were hammered into wood by the children and the boxes began to take shape. A positive fun vibe filled the area as wooden boxes were put together and children proudly showed everyone their creations! The kindergarten staff thank Amy, Bunnings and especially all their wonderful family members.

Saturday market a community hub Every Saturday morning, the church grounds of St Paul’s Anglican church in West Melton are transformed into a hive of community activity as local producers set up their stalls and visitors browse, shop, and catch up with friends. Established three years ago to draw people in and grow the parish, the market offers a huge variety of locally grown, produced and crafted goods. The fern looks to be a ponga, which at this time of the year the older fronds die off and new fronds will begin to grow from the centre. It is better to keep the plant well-watered at this time as the new growth begins, especially down the centre of the plant. Newly transplanted pongas do take quite a long time to settle in.

Function over form Consider what you intend to use your outdoor space for. If you don’t plan on eating outside, there’s no need for a dining table, but buy some comfortable outdoor seating instead.
